Producing Fruit

Oct 18, 2026  •  Pastor Daniel Greiner

Drawing from the Parable of the Tenants in Matthew 21, this sermon explores the rich, layered meaning of one of Jesus' most pointed parables. Delivered in a moment of rising tension between Jesus and the religious leaders of his day, the parable is not merely a short story with a moral but a sweeping theological narrative that connects God's covenant with Abraham, the ministry of the Old Testament prophets, and the rejection and death of Jesus himself. The landowner represents God, the tenants represent the nation of Israel entrusted with blessing the world, the servants represent the prophets who were rejected, and the son represents Jesus. The sermon emphasizes that the kingdom of God was given to a new people -- those who would produce fruit -- and that the church today stands in that place of responsibility. The central challenge is not to simply perform religious activity but to sharpen focus on what truly matters: becoming more like Christ, listening to his voice, and making disciples.
