Day 4 of Cultivating A Heart For Harvest

Clearing The Thorns
Reading
: Luke 12:22-31

Jesus instructs His followers not to be consumed by worry over life's necessities, reminding them that God knows what they need and that seeking His kingdom above all else is the proper priority.

Thorns do not announce themselves as threats. They simply grow -- quietly, persistently, alongside everything else. Worry feels responsible. Ambition feels motivated. The pursuit of more feels reasonable. And none of these things are wrong in themselves. But when they are left unchecked, they consume the space that was meant for God. The thorny-soil heart is not a cold or hostile heart. It is a crowded one. It wants to follow Jesus and carry every burden at the same time. But a heart divided between trust and anxiety, between God and wealth, between faith and fear, cannot produce the fruit it was made for. Tending the garden of the heart means regularly identifying what has grown up uninvited and choosing to release it back to God.

Reflection:  What worries or ambitions are currently taking up the most space in your heart? Are they drawing you closer to God or crowding Him out?
