Day 3 of Love Calls Us Home

While You Were Still Far Off

Reading
:Luke 15:20; Romans 5:8; Psalm 139:7-10

The most extraordinary detail in the entire parable is this: while the son was still a long way off, his father saw him. He had not yet arrived. He had not yet delivered his carefully rehearsed speech. He had not yet proven that his repentance was genuine. And yet his father, filled with compassion, ran to meet him. Jesus did not tell us that the father waited at the door with folded arms. He ran. This single image reshapes everything we think we know about how God responds to those who return to him. Romans 5:8 tells us that God demonstrated his love for us while we were still sinners. God does not wait for us to become worthy. He moves toward us in our brokenness. You may feel far from home today, but you are never beyond the Father's sight.

Personal Reflection: Have you been waiting to approach God until you feel more worthy or more put-together? What would it mean to believe that he is already running toward you?
