Hearing with the Heart
Reading: Matthew 13:10-17, James 1:22-25
Jesus explains to his disciples that parables reveal truth to those who are genuinely seeking and conceal it from those whose hearts have grown hard. This is a sobering thought. It is entirely possible to sit under teaching week after week, to know the stories and the doctrines, and still walk away unchanged. James echoes this warning, comparing a hearer who does not act to someone who glances in a mirror and immediately forgets what they look like. The word of God is meant to do something to us. It is meant to interrupt us, redirect us, and reshape us. Let it.
