Day 4 of Love Calls Us Home

The Robe, the Ring, and the Feast

Reading
:Luke 15:21-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Romans 8:15-16

The son arrived home prepared to negotiate. He had a speech ready. He would confess his sin, surrender his identity as a son, and ask only for a place among the hired servants. He could imagine getting back onto the property, but he could not imagine being welcomed back into the family. This is how shame works. It tells us that we may be tolerated but never truly restored. But the father did not offer the son a servant's quarters. He called for the finest robe, a ring, and a celebration. Each detail was a declaration: you belong here. You are still my son. Ephesians 2:8-10 reminds us that salvation is a gift, not a wage. We do not serve God to earn our place in his household. We serve because we already belong.

Personal Reflection: Are you relating to God more like a servant trying to earn approval than a son or daughter who already belongs? Where does shame still shape the way you approach him?
