The Danger of Passing By
Reading: Luke 10:30-32; Leviticus 19:16; James 2:14-17
The priest and the Levite were not evil men. They were respected, educated, and devoted to religious practice. And yet, when a wounded man lay before them, they crossed to the other side of the road. Their desire to remain ceremonially clean overrode their call to preserve human life. It is easy to read this and feel a sense of moral superiority, but the question worth sitting with is this: in what ways do you and I cross to the other side? Busyness, discomfort, inconvenience, and fear of what helping might cost us can all become the road we cross to avoid someone in need.
Reflection Question
Is there someone in your life right now whose need you have been avoiding because responding would be costly or uncomfortable?
