Compassion That Moves
Reading: Luke 10:33-35; Matthew 9:36;
Mark 1:40-41; Luke 7:13-15
The Samaritan did not simply feel sorry for the wounded man. His compassion moved him to act. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus is described repeatedly as being moved with compassion, and that compassion was never passive. It healed the sick, fed the hungry, raised the dead, and restored the broken. The compassion of Jesus was always followed by action. God does not call us to feel deeply and do nothing. Emotion without action is not compassion -- it is sentiment. When you see someone hurting, let the love of God stir something in you that goes beyond a sympathetic thought and becomes a tangible response.
Reflection Question
When you encounter someone in pain, does your compassion tend to stop at feeling, or does it move you toward doing?
