Day 1 of Humility Finds Us

The Danger of Self-Sufficiency

Reading
:  Luke 18:9-14

Jesus aimed this parable directly at those confident in their own righteousness. It is easy to read that description and immediately think of someone else. That instinct itself is worth examining. The Pharisee was not a villain by his culture's standards. He was disciplined, devoted, and obedient. Yet his prayer revealed a heart turned inward rather than upward. When our spiritual accomplishments become the foundation of our standing before God, we have quietly replaced dependence with pride. Ask yourself honestly today: am I drawing God's attention to how well I am doing? True faith begins where self-sufficiency ends.

Reflection: In what area of your life are you most tempted to rely on your own spiritual performance rather than God's grace?
